A home composter will allow you to recycle your family’s organic waste. It's easy and practicable. You’ll soon have rich compost to improve your garden’s soil and boost your indoor plants. Live in an apartment? Get together with your house committee and purchase a composter for joint use of families in your building. Your communal garden and balcony tubs will soon benefit.

City of Ashdod: contempt of court

The Beersheba District Court has agreed to hearings to review IUED’s claim that the City of Ashdod is in contempt of court for its failure to meet a court-mandated agreement to clean-up of building waste in its jurisdiction.

Bottle Deposit Law

The Knesset has approved amendments to the bottle & can deposit law. Responsibility for collection of drinks containers now falls directly on manufacturers & distributors. Controversially, the larger 1.5 liter bottles remain outside of the law and will be collected by producers and importers under a voluntary agreement with the Environment Ministry.

3Rs - reduce, reuse and recycle

IUED's annual solid waste professional conference focused this year on recycling. Over 400 representatives of recycling businesses, municipalities and government rolled up their sleeves to talk about rubbish.

Double Benefits! Good Deeds Day

This year's Good Deeds day brought in nearly 1,200 pieces of electronic waste - computers, moniotors, TVs and household appliances diverted from landfill and sent to reuse and recycling. This is almost double the quantity collected last year.

Reducing packaging waste

It's time for new approaches to packaging waste. IUED is calling for an Israeli packaging law based on models succesfully implemented in the European Union.

Bag the Bag (Plastic)

Israeli stores and supermarkets give away more than 14 million plastic bags every day. Plastic bags constitute some 28 percent of discarded garbage in Israel by volume, and 7 percent by weight.
IUED’s legislative bill to reduce plastic bag use is currently under Knesset review.

Recycling tires

Over two million motor vehicle tires are discarded every year in Israel. New legislation is to be implemented over a six year period for the development of collection facilities and rubber recycling industries.

Sludge to fertilizer

After a long struggle to find a land-based alternative to marine discharge of sewage from Israel’s most densely populated central region, the Shafdan's sewage sludge is to be made into organic fertilizer to benefit Israeli agriculture.

Solid waste in Israel

Solid waste disposal in Israel causes significant and irreversible damage to Israel’s air, soil, groundwater, and quality of life.

Israel currently produces some 5.3 million tons of garbage each year – an average of nearly 5 pounds per person per day. Over 80 percent of this waste is still buried in landfills – an impractical solution in a country with a high standard of living, rising population, and scarcity of land resources.
