Report: Sewage flows in our streets

IUED's Annual Environmental Report highlights this year the sorry state of Israel's sewage treatments. Over 150 communities are not connected to a sewage network. Insufficient infrastructure and overloading of poorly maintained systems means that in some areas, raw sewage flows in streets, open canals, fields and orchards.

Court tells Defense Ministry to come back with a plan

The Defense Ministry must submit within six months with a remediation plan and budgetary allocation for cleaning up contamination of water resoures at the Hatzor airforce base. Millions of gallons of airplane fuel from the base form a contaminated plume in the coastal aquifer.

IUED is calling on the new attorney general, Yehuda Weinstein, to respond to the State Comptroller’s report with a decision to cancel plans for a 350-unit holiday village.

Asbestos clean up in Nahariya

Update on asbestos clean up in the Galilee: IUED lawsuit spurs government to appoint clean up authority. New legislation is also in on its way. IUED is monitoring progress and our court case is on hold, pending implementation of the clean up strategy.

Bottle Deposit Law

The Knesset has approved amendments to the bottle & can deposit law. Responsibility for collection of drinks containers now falls directly on manufacturers & distributors. Controversially, the larger 1.5 liter bottles remain outside of the law and will be collected by producers and importers under a voluntary agreement with the Environment Ministry.
